Mit. From 1896 onward, Auguste Rodin, one of the most important sculptors of the modern age, created a wide-ranging oeuvre of drawings in which he showed himself to be an innovator in this genre too. This study sheds light for the first time on the art-theoretical background against which Rodin could regard his sketchy drawings as 'work'. Previously unpublished notes by the Frenchman and a comparison with the work of other contemporary artists provide a comprehensive interpretation of important drawings in which the special qualities of Rodin's poetic 'art of evocation' emerge. A second volume also shows how Rodin's late drawings inspired Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's conception of art and drawing.
