Ce livre est consacré à l'histoire des concepts de la langue scientifique arabe, forgés au cours du travail de traduction (à partir du grec notamment) ou inventés pour les besoins d'une recherche originale, dès la fin du VIIIe siècle. Il s'agit du premier lexique raisonné de la terminologie scientifique classique de l'arabe, en quelque langue que ce soit. Impensable il y a encore un demi-siècle, cet ouvrage de plus de mille pages a été rendu possible par une meilleure connaissance des textes scientifiques anciens, dont la traduction, le commentaire et l'analyse ont été permis à leur tour par la découverte récente de nouveaux manuscrits et la publication de nombreuses éditions critiques. Il offre à ce titre à l'historien des sciences et de la philosophie en terre d'Islam, sans parler de l'historien de la langue arabe, un instrument indispensable à sa recherche ; mais c'est aussi une oeuvre dont ne pourront se passer les historiens des sciences grecques, médiévales et classiques, qui y trouveront un éclairage nouveau, et une véritable réflexion, sur des termes et des concepts essentiels à leur champ d'étude. Arabic scientific terminology in the classical period holds a key part for understanding the formation and the history of concepts, and for studying the circulation of knowledge in the Mediterranean world and the formation of the scientific vocabulary in Latin or Hebrew. However no systematic study has up to now been devoted to this lexicon. It is this gap that this book intends to fill, by putting the composition of a historical dictionary of the Arabic scientific language in hand. The purpose of this work is threefold: first, to provide those editing Arabic scientific texts with a tool that is now lacking; then to allow the historian and the philosopher of sciences-even if not an Arabist-to delimit the emergence and the evolution of the concepts constituent of classical science (17th century) or the transformation of their meaning; finally, to study the process of transmission of these concepts and their acculturation (transition from one cultural area to another).
