Malocclusion can be defined as an abnormal occlusion in which the teeth are not in a normal position in relation to adjacent teeth in the same jaw and/or the opposing teeth when the jaws are closed. The opposite of malocclusion is considered as Ideal Occlusion, but the definition of the same has changed over the period of time and varies from author to author. By improving the aesthetics, the functionality of the dentition is restored. In recent times, there has been a growing concern as well as interest in aesthetics of one as orthodontic treatment improves the oral health-related quality of life. Thus the knowledge of the possible etiology and epidemiology is very much essential to treat and prevent malocclusion.
