David Friedländer (1750-1834) gilt als geistiger Nachfolger seines Lehrers und Freundes Moses Mendelssohn und als Vater des Preußischen Emanzipationsedikts von 1812. Sein immenser Beitrag zu diesem Prozess waren beispielsweise pädagogische Reformen, die u. a. mit der Gründung der jüdischen Freischule in Berlin 1778 verwirklicht wurden, für die er Schulbücher schrieb und das hebräische Gebetbuch ins Deutsche übersetzte. Die Darstellung macht nicht nur das Wirken Friedländers, sondern auch einige bekannte Persönlichkeiten lebendig, so zählten Alexander und Wilhelm von Humboldt, Goethe oder auch Friedrich Nicolai zu seinem Bekannten- und Freundeskreis. David Friedländer (1750-1834) is considered the intellectual successor to his teacher and friend Moses Mendelssohn and as the father of the Prussian Emancipation Edict of 1812. His massive contribution to this process was the exemplary educational reforms which were realised in achievements including the founding of the Jewish Free School in Berlin in 1778, for which he wrote textbooks and translated the Hebrew prayer book into German. This account not only brings to life Friedländer and his influence, but also other well-known figures: Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt, Goethe and Friedrich Nicolai were all part of his circle of friends and acquaintances.
